Turning Your Home Heating System on for the First Time This Season

Sunday, March 11th, 2012

We just had a cold front and it might not be our last before spring. If you haven’t turned on your home heating system in something like eight or nine months, which most of us haven’t, you may find its time to have a repairman come out for a quick servicing before your entire family arrives for the holidays. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind when turning on your heater for the first time of the season:

A little odor is normal. Your heater is simply just burning off leftover dust that has been accumulating in the past months. You can prevent this by wiping down the furnace before turning it on. However, if the odor persists, check to make sure all the vents in your home are open. If several of the rooms are closed off, this can cause heat to build up in your furnace. Also, try changing the filter, as it may be clogged or dirty. If the smell continues, it may be time to call a repairman.

If the heater is on and the thermostat is set to the desirable temperature, and your home just doesn’t seem to be warming up, turn your unit off. A running heater can emit poisonous carbon monoxide gases into your home that can make you and your family sick. Also, allowing your heater to run means a higher utility bill for you and lower energy efficiency. In this situation, it’s best to call a trusted repair service.

If you are having trouble with your home heating system, give the folks at A-Peoria Plumbing a call. They offer 24 Hour Emergency Service, and will respond immediately to ensure you and your family are safe and comfortable.
